SMILE Surgery — The Newest Way to Remove Your Glasses Without a Flap
A patient asked me last week why it's called “SMILE” half expecting some clever backronym about happiness after surgery. It's actually simpler than that: it stands for Small Incision Lenticule Extraction. A proper evaluation, including corneal mapping, is still the only way to know for sure.
Because there's no flap to heal, many patients report slightly less initial dryness and irritation compared to LASIK, though this varies by individual. Vision typically improves over the first few days, continuing to sharpen over the following weeks. The small incision heals on its own without stitches, and most patients resume normal activities within a couple of days, with the usual precautions — avoiding water in the eyes, no rubbing, and sunglasses outdoors during the healing period.
Not exactly “better” across the board — it depends on the individual eye. For patients with myopia and astigmatism who are also somewhat prone to dry eyes, SMILE is often the more comfortable choice.
